Some Brief Words on Haiti (August 2014)
Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world. This is not only due to issues of political upheaval and widespread corruption, but also in large part down to the two large-scale natural disasters it has endured in recent years. The 2010 earthquake and the hurricane in 2016 have devastated the country and the population is understandably struggling.
Additionally, the population of the small island is heavily reliant on imports to survive which augments and inflates the cost of living. Investors are scarce and the trade and fiscal deficit is constantly increasing.
This already difficult situation is further exacerbated by the steady rise in population.
